The caps on this radio were quite bad and audio was unintelligible.

This Sony shortwave receiver was manufactured in japan from MHz and cover the rest of hf amateur radio bands, commercial CB bands. That is the interesting thing with radio propagation, especially on shortwave, as there are so many variables.

With the sw1, you can tune into any am, fm or shortwave signals as frequency extends from bottom of am band in long wave section 150 khz. However, this radio has had the defective capacitors recently replaced so it works perfectly. For us, we especially like the alternative news sources that an interesting option to big media owned here in USA.

All the above are easy DX catches here on east coast in central pa and of them can be listened to English.

Just above the tropical bands, listeners then enters into hf or high frequencies of shortwave where one can receive broadcasts from all over world at push a button. Almost all offer some sort of news, whether local or world both, but many also cultural music. The capacitor failure manifests itself as a motor boating sound when turning on radio and you are trying to hear station.

Europe still uses these lower frequencies and the band extends into am which is very heavily used both in north America also other parts of world including south America, Africa, Asia middle east. It is about the size of a deck playing cards and yet capable picking with dozens signals across its many bands.
