Review Panasonicrf2200. Cosmetically, the radio is in good overall condition and is a nice example of this 70's analog radio. I noticed that overall the radio is rated well, but a couple of users were disappointed in the drift which I have never personally experienced as a problem so suppose that it may have been their specific units.

With am, you lift the ferret bar and swivel it for best reception.

I have used this receiver with remarkable results. With this rf 22 she spent considerable time detail cleaning the exterior it so it looks so much nicer than when it came into our hands.

The CD is not for sale and so this CD is given to the new owner to help operate and maintain the radio. On 1 frequency alone, it is common to id multiple stations merely by turning the ferret antenna and tuning in at various times of the day. This 8 band portable Panasonic rf 2200 receiver circa 1978 has long been considered a dx machine on medium wave, but also is a respectable unit on shortwave and fm as well.

Analog receivers died a hard death and were replaced by these newer receivers. I was able to receive stations that my more expensive setups could not hear. Thus, it has reputation for performance that has not been surpassed.

By using this radio, the radio log, and spending some time, I have been able to id literally a couple of hundred stations at all times of the day and night ironically, the rf 2200 became obsolete in the late 70's due to the introduction of new digital receivers that had frequency readouts. The rf 2200 has an advantage over the other receivers that I use. In the past, I have spent a great deal of time reconditioning these radios cosmetically, but due to the time to clean and recondition the rf 22 it is hard to set aside the time necessary to restore these as is required.

At other times, the rotation allows you to get more than one readable station on the frequency. You tune to a frequency and then rotate the antenna for best reception.

However, this little unit has found a nice following with various die hard medium wave deer's that know that it may not offer digital readout, but it is not outperformed in the area of reception by these same receivers. My wife worked on this particular cosmetic restoration and did as best as she could considering that there were some cosmetic imperfections that could not be erased.

Item number 12. The analog circuitry allows for long battery life and the reception is superb on both am and fm.

About this rf2200. Electronically, the rf 2200 operates just beautifully.

Shortwave is very good, fm is superb, but am is outstanding.

So imagine my surprise when I did a side by side comparison and determined that this little portable actually out performed a couple of my desktop receivers using outside antennas.

And while this radio is known for it's am reception, it is no slacker on shortwave or fm either.

The contacts on this radio were cleaned and lubricated and now allow the radio to operate perfectly. There has been much written about this radio over the years. I then use the national radio club's am radio log to determine the station possibilities and zero in on the station id.

Both of these frequency ranges worked with great results and I would have to say that fm reception was as nearly as impressive as that on am.

I would estimate that about 95 of these radios suffer from bad contact issues and if you find the rf 2200 for sale on, it is almost guaranteed to need some service attention. The original whip antenna was broken and has been replaced. The resulting sound is very good and can be tailored to suit your taste using the built in tone controls.

It has a rotating ferret antenna that works beautifully with the sensitive circuitry. It is very common for these radios to have intermittent contacts on the band switches resulting in either poor or no reception on the am and shortwave bands.

The fact that the gyro antenna does not lock does not affect performance as it can be easily rotated and then rested on the radio's top. The gyro antenna does not remain upright. There is a lot of soil that collects in the knob grooves, speaker grill, and in all the cracks and crevices and this cleaning is painstaking work, but the results are worth it. On some frequencies, the rotation enables you to eliminate null interfering stations.
