Always used in my no smoking home. The switch and gain control do work quite well as I have used this on an hf radio in Sb a mobile vhf uhf FM digital voice modes. Depending on the brand and model of radio, base this mic does provide for up down frequency operation as well call, CFO, memory recall Mr r programmable function pf buttons.

The base has a switch underneath to optimize audio for FM wide or Sb sharper use. You can easily buy Jr-45 plugs as well Jr-11, rubber cover shells and even the crimp tool for these type connectors from home depot of all places. Condenser microphone on goose neck base.

The base has a power on off switch and an led that flashes until you press Pitt or lock then light remains solid while are in transmit mode. Even the NS-24y cable that I have for yeas radios works perfectly. Universal radio appears to still have a few of the mic Jr-45 icon and ken wood, 8 pin round or modular plug at opposite end, cable adapters available.

An adjustable gain control is also underneath to allow you optimize the audio level for particular radio are connected too.

I power off the mic when not in use to eliminate 2 lamp of current draw 3 ma transmit but have forgotten it a few times.
